Infiltration Excess Runoff Generation

Infiltration excess overland flow occurs, most commonly in arid areas, where rainfall intensity exceeds the infiltration capacity which is the rate at which soil can absorb surface water input. This may occur over the entire watershed, or over part of the area as illustrated in the animation. This type of runoff generation is referred to as saturation from above, or the Horton mechanism.
