Calculated Net Evaporation from Reservoirs

in the Chi-Mun River Basin,Thailand

Introduction

 

        The Chi-Mun River Basin is located in the northeast Thailand. The Chi and Mun River Basins have drainage area about 49,000 and 71,000 km2, respectively, which cover about 23.2% of the national area. The location of the basins is shown in figure 1.

The river system of the basins flows from west to east direction. The downstream end of the Mun river flows to the Khong River which is Asia’s international river. The Chi River Basin could be considered as a major sub-basin of the Mun River Basin. There are many existing large irrigation projects in the Chi-Mun River Basin which required many hydrologic data to operate the irrigation projects. The large irrigation projects are shown in figure 2.

Before setting a plan to operate the areas, reservoir simulations must be done. The programs which could be used for simulating the river system are HEC-3 (Reservoir System Analysis for Conservation) or HEC-5 (Simulation of Flood Control and Conservation Systems) which were distributed by Hydrologic Engineerig Center, US Army Crops of Engineers. There are many hydrologic and physical data that must be prepared as the input for the programs. One of the hydrologic data is net evaporation from reservoirs. There are various methods to estimate values of net evaporation. This project shows an accurate method to calculate these values.

 

Objective

 

        The object of this project is to calculate monthly net evaporation over the large reservoirs in the study area by using ArcGIS program. There are five large reservoirs in the study area, namely Nam Phrom Reservoir, Nam Phong Reservoir, Lam Pao Reservoir, Lam Takhong Reservoir, and Lam Dom Noi Reservoir. The first three reservoirs are in the Chi River Basin and the last two reservoirs are in the Mun River Basin. Locations of the large reservoirs are shown in figure 3.

Data requirement

 

        There are seven categories of data for this project which are:

 

1.    Location of rainfall stations in and around the study area with values of average monthly rainfall

2.    Location of climate stations in and around the study area with values of average monthly pan evaporation

3.    Watershed delineation of the large reservoirs

4.    Reservoir areas

5.    Reservoir inflows

6.    River line to display the drainage system of the study area

7.    Watershed delineation of the Chi-Mun River Basin

 

The data of climate stations are shown in the table A1 in Appendix A. The location of the climate stations were imported to ArcGIS by using the projection “GCS_WGS_1984.” After this, the layer was projected to “WGS_1984_UTM_Zone_48N.” The layer has all attributes as shown in the table A1. There are 10 climate stations in the study area and 13 climate stations around the area. Locations of the climate stations along with the station code are shown in figure 4.

There are 510 selected rainfall stations for using in this project which can be subdivide to 196, 225, and 89 stations in the Chi River Basin, in the Mun River Basin, and around the study area, respectively. The data of rainfall stations are shown in the table A2 in Appendix A. The processes of importing the rainfall stations were the same as climate stations. Locations of the rainfall stations along with the station code are shown in figure 5.

Methodology

 

        Monthly net evaporation from reservoirs will be calculated by using the equation:

 

Enet   =      0.7 Epan – (1 - C)R

 

where Enet is monthly net evaporation from reservoir (mm); Epan is monthly pan evaporation from climate stations (mm); C is runoff coefficient; and R is monthly rainfall (mm). The coefficient 0.7 is pan factor for converting pan evaporation to actual evaporation from reservoir water surface.

       

        The equation might be strange for many people. The root of this equation will be described by using Nam Phrom River Basin as an example. Let consider the basin with pre-project and present conditions as shown in figure 6.

        Another one of the input data for HEC-3 is natural flow from basin. Natural flow means surface runoff from a basin which has pre-project condition. For this condition, natural flow could be divided to be two parts: natural flow from the area out of the reservoir area, and natural flow from the reservoir area with soil cover (before flooded by dam).

 

Natural Flow = Natural Flow[out] + Natural Flow[reservoir area with no water]

 

        Natural flow could be represented by runoff coefficient of soil cover (C) multiply by average rainfall over the area (R).

 

CR = CR [out] + CR [reservoir area with no water]

 

        Let consider a reservoir area. Net flow depth from the area is equal to water depth which gains from rainfall (Cw*R) minus actual evaporation (0.7*Epan). However, the runoff coefficient of water surface (Cw) is equal to 1.0 then:

 

 

Analysis

 

        The rainfall and pan evaporation data are considered as point data. However, the formula which will be used for calculating net evaporation from reservoirs must be applied over the areas. This means that the rainfall and pan evaporation data must be estimated for the reservoir areas and reservoir basins. To estimate the average values of the rainfall and pan evaporation over the study area, the data must be interpolated and extrapolated by using spatial analysis though out the study area. Kriging method will be used for this step.

 

The old fashion way to show the result is drawing contour lines. Then polygons between contour lines can be generated. The values of rainfall and pan evaporation are one of the attributes of the polygons. By using intersect function in GIS software; the average values over the interested areas will be achieved. A disadvantage of this method is that even if an interested area fall anywhere inside a polygon, the average value over the area will not change. This effect of inaccuracy will increase if the interval of contour lines is high.

 

        To avoid this disadvantage, the spatial distribution of the data was generated by using ArcGIS function with Kriging method. The outputs from the program are DEM (Digital elevation Models) by using cellsize (X,Y) equal to (200,200) meters. The example of the output for pan evaporation for April is shown in figure 7.

        In figure 7, the values beside the climate station are measured pan evaporation values. The highest value is 208.2 mm and the lowest value is 160.7 mm. However, the values from DEM at the same locations are 198.9 mm and 172.2 mm, respectively, which have error 4.5% and 7.1% when compared with the measured data. This is very high error. Also, as we can see, the DEM from ArcGIS function is not smooth and I do not know how to extend the DEM to cover though out the study area (the east part of the study area).

 

        To get rid of these problems, another program is introduced which is Surfer program. By using the same method as ArcGIS, Kriging method, the outputs from Surfer were generated and transformed into ASCII format as ArcGIS input files. ArcToolbox was used for convert the ASCII files to DEM. An example of DEM of pan evaporation for April from this method is shown in figure 8.

        In figure 8, the values from DEM at the locations of highest and lowest measured values are 208.0 mm and 161.9 mm, respectively, which have error only 0.1% and 0.2% when compared with the measured data. This is acceptable. Also, the DEM from Surfer is very smooth compare with using ArcGIS function. Then Surfer was selected for using to generate input files of ArcGIS for every month and also annual data. The outputs of pan evaporation for April until March and annual pan evaporation in millimeters are shown in Appendix B figure B1 to B13.

 

        Spatial distributions of rainfall over the study area were also generated by using Surfer program with Kriging method. The outputs of rainfall for April until March and annual rainfall in millimeters are shown in Appendix C figure C1 to C13.

 

Results

 

        The values of average monthly pan evaporation and rainfall over the reservoir area and reservoir basin were calculated as shown the results in the table 1.

        Runoff coefficient can be calculated by dividing inflow to reservoir in unit depth by average rainfall over basin. Then net evaporation can be calculated by using the above formula. The net evaporation values are both positive and negative. The positive values mean after reservoir area was flooded, the loss from evaporation is higher than water that gains more from direct rainfall. In contrast with the negative values, they indicate that reservoir gains more water from direct rainfall than loss from evaporation.

 

Conclusions

 

        ArcGIS is a powerful tool for preparing input data of hydrologic modeling. This project shows how to use ArcGIS program to estimate net evaporation from reservoirs. Also another program, Surfer, was used to generate grid data by using Kriging method. The DEMs from Surfer show better spatial distribution than ArcGIS function. However, the comparison between these two programs has to be done carefully in the future. The results should be compared by using an out of sample test to check the accuracy of interpolation again.
